Period/breadth studies
At GCSE, the period study allows students to focus on a substantial and coherent medium time span of at least 50 years or more and will usually trace changes and developments in that period. At A-Level a breadth study requires the study of an extended period and enables students to develop secure understanding of differing perspectives, causation, similarity and difference and the process of change over time. The period of the breadth study is often between 50-100 years, and sometimes more.
