At first I didn’t like this book at all and then it got more exciting and had lots of twists and turns in it. Now I love it. The main character is Jabir, a boy who loves whittling and is very good at it. He carves horsemen that get sent to Charlemagne.

I liked the ending when he fought back against the landlord and the clock went to Charlemagne. I found the fact that they actually had camel beauty contests really funny.

I learned that Charlemagne was a Holy Roman Emperor, and the word sayiid is a mark of respect in Arabic. Back then they were much more religious and there were no machines to do things for you – I’m talking about high tech stuff. 

I would recommend this book to children who are interested in history and different religions.

The Golden Horsemen of Baghdad is about a boy named Jabir who is an excellent carver. When his family get thrown out of his house by their landlord, he goes to Baghdad to seek work. When a clock-maker comes across his exquisite carvings, he hires Jabir to make twelve horsemen for Harun al-Rashid, the caliph, his life could change forever. Soon he's stuck in a world of wood, thiefs and fire...I rate it 5 stars.

I really liked this as it's kind of like an adventure book as the scenes change a lot This books is about a boy called Jabir who needs a job to hep pay rent. The owner of the house has many attempts to kill Jabir. Will he survive? I would recommend this book for 9-12 years old and rate it 4 stars.
