She Wolf
By Dan Smith
Chloe's review
Stars: 4 ★★★★
I enjoyed this book as it was an adventure story. I found Ylva the main character the most interesting as she is determined to finish what she sets her mind to. I didn’t really like Bron as he never really talks and all he does is hand gestures. I would describe the plot as thought-provoking because I learnt more about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings . I recommend this book to young readers who like adventure stories. This book has lots of twists up its sleeve which will keep you on your toes!
Holly's review
Some of the characters in this book
- A viking called Ylva
- A Saxon called Cathryn
- A three-fingered man
- A witch called Mildred
The things I liked about this book
I liked the description of the different settings in this book. From the Traders hut at the beginning of the book to the Witches home where the story ended.
The things I disliked about She Wolf
The story line was slow going, just about the quest for revenge on the three-fingered man for killing Ylva’s mother. I feel there should be something more within the story line of this book. I would have liked to see the wolves within the story appear more than just every night.
Who I would recommend this book to
I would only recommend to age 10 and above as this book has a lot of plot points that do not make sense to younger readers/children.
Lewis's review
The characters I found most interesting were Cathryn and Bron who were Anglo Saxons. They rescued slaves but people (mostly Vikings) thought they stole the slaves so they could sell them for money.
There were two characters I didn’t like were the three fingered man (Torstein Ulvemand) and the flame haired woman (Astrid) who Ylva hunted down throughout the book misbelieving that they murdered her mother.
I didn’t find out anything new except that Odin had two wolves called Geri and Freki. In the book they feature as Ylva’s pets/ friends. Geri is an elkhound and Freki is a wolf pup.
The fact it was set in the Viking times made it interesting because people had different beliefs when this story takes place and their thoughts are harder to read. Also it is harder to predict what might happen later on in the book.
The plot was exciting, thought provoking and serious because there is a hunt which makes you try and guess what come next but it is serious because it is a book about revenge.
The things that stand out the most are that Ylva is determined to find who she believes murdered her mother but when she is presented the idea of not trying to kill who she thinks killed her mother and going to stay somewhere safe she refuses to even though her mother always used to say survival comes first.
There aren’t many new facts except the Saxon name for various places in the UK. Bamburgh was Bebbaburg, Catterick was Cetreht, Chippenham was Cippanhamm, Durham was Dunholm, York was Eforowic, Cambridge was Grantaceaster, Jarrow was Gyruum, Repton was Hreapandune, Lindisfarne was Lindisfarena, London was Lundene, Nottingham was Snotengaham, and The Isle of Wight was Wiht. These names are new words that I have learnt.
I would recommend this book to anyone who over the age of 9. I recommend this book because it is full of twists and turns. It keeps you thinking about what might come next. On the back, the book described in three words is Vikings, vengeance, wolves. That describes what is in the book. If I were to describe the book in 3 descriptions I would say, amazing, a page turner, action packed.

This week I have read the book 'She Wolf' by Dan Smith. This book is set in the Viking era and is about a girl named Ylva. Her mother has died thanks to raiders but she survived. She goes seeking revenge but will she survive the horrors that lay ahead? I would recommend this book to ages 10+. It made the Vikings come alive for me.
Simone's review
It has a good moral - you don't always need revenge. They call Ylva She-Wolf because she's very fierce. Her mother dies and even though she's a Danish Viking she's forced to go to Saxon England with her slave master. It's adventurous and exciting and set during the change-over.
