Book Review
Historiography - an Introduction Roger Spalding and Christopher Parker Manchester University Press, ISBN 978 0 7190 7285 7 Pub 2007. £9.99
Although aimed at Undergraduates, this book will be immensely useful to students at AS and A2. It is a readable and stimulating introduction to the topic, clearing away much of the fog of confusion that sometimes grips students as they try to come to terms with history as a discipline and not just a body of knowledge. It is full of practical advice and a really useful introduction that explores the many and varied uses of the term ‘history' in society.
The final three chapters, which focus on the historiography of ‘Gender,' ‘the Nazis' and ‘Marxism' are particulary valuable in applying the general ideas suggested throughout the book to areas of specific concern for many students. A very practical and thought-provoking introduction to what many students find a difficult area of study at A Level.
