We are pleased to be hosting a Doing History at University event for students and teachers in partnership with the University of Sheffield. The aim of the event is to introduce students to history at university, and how to make yourself stand out in the application process. This one-day event will equip students with the tools to ensure that you have the best chance of studying history at the university of your choice.

  • Who is the event for?

The event is aimed at students thinking about studying history at university. If you’re keen or just curious, come along and find out what to expect and how to make your application stand out. The programme is also suitable for teachers looking to support students applying for history at university.

  • Who is running the event?

This event is run in partnership between the Historical Association and the School of History, Philosophy and Digital Humanities at the University of Sheffield.

Sheffield University has one of the largest, most active and successful centres for teaching and historical research in the UK. It was ranked among the UK’s top three history departments for the impact and quality of its research, and its teaching is consistently rated as excellent.

Workshops will be led by Heather Sherman, who teaches history at a sixth-form college in Doncaster. Heather has specialised in A-level history teaching for almost ten years and has extensive experience in training teachers. Most importantly, she has supported a number of students to successfully apply to study history at university.

The Historical Association is the UK national charity for history and subject association for history in schools. We support the teaching, learning and enjoyment of history at all levels and bring together people who share an interest in and love for the past. We have almost 9,000 members and offer a range of online, print and in-person resources.

  • What does the programme involve?

The programme for the day will include:

    • • Advice about admissions from the University of Sheffield
    • • A sample lecture from Professor Julie Gottlieb
    • • A sample seminar with Dr Miriam Dobson
    • • Making the transition from sixth form to university history
    • • What makes a great undergraduate historian
    • • How to make your UCAS application stand out
    • • Support for those applying to universities with interviews
    • • A chance to meet current students
  • How do I take part?

The event is open for anyone to attend, but please book your place in advance. A fee of £5 is charged to cover the cost of attendance. Places are limited with a maximum of 5 per school and teachers may book places on behalf of their students.
