A Beautiful Lie by Irfan Master - Shortlisted - Published by Bloomsbury

Reviews

The setting is India before partition in 1947, and Bilal the main character's home town is full of tensions that soon turn into violence. Bilal's father who is dying of cancer hates the idea of India being torn in two and Bilal cannot watch his father hurt so he decides to lie to him about the situation. This means he has to keep his father isolated from the rest of the world.

I like the book because it taught me lots of things I didn't know about India in 1947 and was also enjoyable to read. I think the book was realistic it had nothing that could not happen though I don't know much about the history so I am not sure about that though the book did make me want to find out more about the history and I did.

Some bits of the book made me laugh and some I could relate to because Bilal was about my age also some bits made me want to cry. It was quite a sad book but I did not want to put it down.

The only bad thing about this book was that when I read the back and read the title I thought he would be telling a really big lie to maybe some one important not just to his dad. But overall I really enjoyed this book and would like to read more by this author.
