The Italian Fascist leader Benito Mussolini understood more than other leaders of his generation the power of images and used them to great effect in building his personality cult which was central to Italian Fascism. In this illustrated webinar, Professor Giuliana Pieri will explore the evolution of the iconography of the Duce in order to track the development of the cult of personality of Mussolini. Martial iconography, references to classical art, and images from modern media all contributed to the creation of complex and multilayered images of the Duce which managed to appeal to broad audiences and sustained the regime until its final demise in the 1940s.
