Military history enthusiast David Wilson writes about why the Berlin Wall is still such an important symbol and reminder.
I first visited Berlin in the mid 1980s when I was stationed in Germany as part of the British Army. It was an interesting place to go because until then the Cold War didn’t seem quite real. I visited Berlin for a weekend with some friends... Once I was there, all I kept wanting to do was go back and see the Wall – a real symbol of a war that otherwise seemed so far away.
I watched the Wall come down on the news on TV like most people. After the excitement my next thought was, I want to go back and see it...
