Webinar series: Effective oracy in the secondary history classroom

Session 5: OK! Talk to me, let me hear your argument
Focus: Key Stage 5 | Presenter: Dani Hilliard

This session will look at potential solutions to some of the problems that students have writing history at A-level. At the core of this session is academic research that advocates the importance of talk within the classroom at whole-class level as well as in small group activities.

The session will start with an examination of seminal research into the writing process itself and its many stages. This research gives the necessary insight into the relevance and importance of the right kind of talk in the classroom, which the Oracy movement advocates, that scaffolds and extends individual and group learning. The session will also offer practical examples of how ‘talk’ can be used within classroom practice which will enhance student development, well-being and also promote effective history learning. Finally, the session will finish with suggestions on how to promote students’ argumentation skills – making judgements, selecting evidence, presenting and defending their case orally, so that the written argument in student essays improve.
