Helen Crawford, FHA

Helen is the chair of our primary committee. She studied history at university and has worked in primary schools for twenty years as a class teacher, history subject leader, inclusion manager and senior leader. She now works training teachers and as a lecturer in Early Childhood Education at the UCL Institute of Education. A trustee of the HA, Quality Mark assessor and a member of the editorial board for Primary History, Helen is immersed in what good history teaching looks like. Helen is also an author and a consultant for BBC Teach and BBC Bitesize primary history.  

Karin Doull, FHA

Karin is an experienced primary teacher and subject leader and is now a consultant having been a university lecturer in history education for many years. Karin is a very active member of the HA and regular contributor to our Annual Conference and other programmes. She is a member of the editorial board for Primary History journal and a frequent author of articles and resources. Among many other things Karin’s passions include diversity in history, teaching emotive and controversial histories and folklore.

Daniel Hartley

Daniel has been in education for over 15 years and his experience spans teaching across Key Stages 1-5 and over 7 years as a senior leader. He now works supporting schools and leaders with assessment, coaching teachers and leaders, curriculum design and SEND. He has an extensive range of experience within primary history, and has worked across schools and learning partnerships developing good practice, including as a Quality Mark assessor. This experience ensures he is always thinking about the big picture and impact of history leadership. 

Steven Kenyon

Steven is a member of our primary committee, having worked as a primary school teacher and then Deputy Head Teacher for over 10 years. He now works with Lancashire Professional Development Service as a teaching and learning consultant for primary history and English. He works closely with Lancashire Archives to promote and develop local history work in primary schools. He takes a keen interest in children’s writing and is a judge for Young Quills Awards.

Steve Mastin, FHA

Steve worked as a teacher for 20 years in state schools across England, then as a senior curriculum leader across primary and secondary schools in a multi-academy trust. He has also helped train teachers for the University of Cambridge and around the world. He has advised the Department of Education on the national curriculum and supported international Ministries of Education to broaden their curriculum and balance national and world history. He is a member of our primary committee and strong advocate for knowledge-rich history teaching and the teaching of ancient history.

Sue Temple, FHA

Sue has a wealth of experience in teaching primary, Early Years and SEND children, including working at a Pupil Referral Unit, and she now leads the history specialism training primary teachers at the University of Cumbria in Carlisle. She has been a dedicated member of our primary committee for almost 20 years, contributing advice, guidance and resources. She is a regular contributor to Primary History journal and our Annual Conferences, and she is also a published author! As an assessor for the primary Quality Mark award, Sue is regularly in schools observing the best that primary history has to offer and the impact of high-quality history on pupils. 

Chris Trevor, FHA

After many years of teaching 5–11-year-olds, Chris was Cheshire’s history, geography and creative cross-curricular adviser and she now works as a consultant. She helps subject leaders design and deliver a creative but rigorous approach to learning which meets the scope and the ambition of the National Curriculum. She is passionate about sharing how to make our subject engaging for teachers and children and leads initial teacher training for academies inspiring and preparing future teachers. A regular contributor to our Annual Conferences and former member of our primary committee, Chris has also been an adviser for the BBC. Her enthusiasm for history is infectious!

Andrew Wrenn, FHA

Andrew's experience as a cross-phase local authority adviser for history and humanities has helped him to marry the best of primary and secondary teaching. Now a consultant, he is a former trustee and committee member of the HA and has contributed extensively to developing others' practice over the years, from numerous conference presentations to articles for Primary History and Teaching History. He is a regular contributor to special projects and work supporting inclusive histories, including co-editing the HA’s Teaching Emotive and Controversial History 3-19 report. Outside of his work for the HA, he has contributed to initial teacher training across the country, delivered CPD internationally, and his work has been published by the BBC, Historic England, and many more.
