Jamie Byrom’s article ‘Using a concluding enquiry to reinforce and assess earlier learning’ (TH 99) offered a practical solution both to weak knowledge acquisition in Year 7 and to effective, worthwhile assessment. This enquiry follows the same model. The assumption is that pupils would be carrying out this enquiry at the end of their work on the medieval period. They arrive knowing something about medieval life, beliefs, social structures and the Crusades. Through varied activities pupils then reveal their understanding, providing you with opportunities to top it up, extend it, challenge misconceptions and open up new questions. As in all good enquiries, pupils should be rendered curious. 11 and 12-olds should be aching to find out more, never satisfied with simple answers. The activities integrate Rachael Rudham’s activity on page 41. They are rooted primarily in National Curriculum Key Elements 2a and 2b but would draw upon earlier learning in aspects of KEs 1, 4 and 5.
