Why did Napoleon end up on St Helena?

Paul Brunyee asks why Napoleon ended up on St Helena, and what life was like for him in exile there.

On his return to Paris after Waterloo, Napoleon had no significant group of supporters left in Paris. He was stunned by his catastrophic defeat and knew he was being outmanoeuvred by Fouché. In one of his flashes of anger he declared that his greatest mistake on returning had been in ot having Fouché either hunged or shot. Fouché was in touch with everyone of note. He had the Royalist Baron de Vitrolles quietly released from prison and in an interview assured him that his goal was the restoration of the king...
