Climate change and sustainability education

How can we make climate change and sustainability a natural part of primary history rather than an add-on? This new subject leader guide offers manageable, age appropriate strategies with a clear rationale, practical examples and planning support to help children link past, present and future and understand their role in environmental change.

Ailsa Fidler is a Senior Lecturer in Primary Education at LJMU, where she leads primary history as well as a module relating to teaching about CCSE. She is a member of the Primary Committee of the Historical Association and is on the editorial board of Primary History. She is an Associate Fellow of the Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education at UCL.

Mary Potts is a teacher at St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School in Liverpool, where she is subject leader for EYFS, history and science. Mary has an MA in Sustainable Development and leads all the Eco Schools initiatives at St Patrick’s. As well as this, Mary has worked hard to develop the local history in school, and St Patrick’s is now one of Historic England’s Champion Heritage Schools.
