Planning a post-1066 thematic study
The requirement in National Curriculum rubric at Key Stage 2 for a study or theme in British history that extends pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066 can appear intimidatingly broad at first sight, but Andrew Wrenn is here to help! Drawing on non-statutory examples provided in the National Curriculum – such as the changing power of monarchs, entertainment in the 20th century, and the legacy of Greek architecture – he provides practical guidance to effectively balance overview and depth, and approaches which will enable you to successfully build on pupils’ prior knowledge, frame rigorous enquiry questions, and encourage critical thinking.
Andrew Wrenn is a former teacher and local authority adviser for History and Humanities. He is a former trustee of the HA and regularly contributes articles and resources to HA publications including Primary History. Andrew has contributed to the HA national conference for many years. His work has been published by the BBC, Pearson, Historic England, Harper-Collins, Longmans and the Oxford and Cambridge University Presses. Andrew has offered CPD at local, national and international level.
