Historical Association leads major review of National Curriculum and GCSE History

Published: 13th January 2026

The Historical Association is proud to announce that it is leading a consortium tasked with drafting changes to the National Curriculum and GCSE subject content, following recommendations from the recent Curriculum and Assessment Review (CAR).

This redrafting aims to build on the strengths of the current curriculum while introducing greater disciplinary coherence and enhancing students’ understanding of how historians construct historical claims. The CAR report highlighted key challenges, including content overload and assessment issues at GCSE level, and recommended reform.

Working alongside an experienced team of curriculum designers and writers, the Historical Association will help to ensure that the revised curriculum develops both the knowledge and skills essential for a robust historical education for all young people from 5 to 18 years of age. The team, led by the Historical Association’s Deputy President, Dr Michael Maddison, brings extensive expertise in curriculum design and educational leadership.

These changes represent an important step toward creating a curriculum that is rigorous, coherent, and reflective of the best practices in historical scholarship.

Further information will be released according to the strict DfE timetable for the process.

The full team led by Michael Maddison are: Jim Carroll, Christine Counsell, Michael Fordham, Rachel Foster, Claire Holliss, Mike Hill and Catherine Priggs.
