New HA short course: Britain and the Romans
February–April 2026
Julius Caesar may have ‘came, seen and conquered’ Britain two millennia ago but what were the enduring legacies of the Romans in Britain, and what difference did their presence for hundreds of years here really make?
In this course we will investigate the Romans who first arrived, those that made Britain their home and those who wrote about it in Rome. What was Roman society like across the Empire and what were the marks of Roman rule in Rome as well as in the ‘place at the end of the world’ that was ‘too cold, too wet and full of barbarians’? Further, once the Roman Empire contracted physically and then historically what continued to be the lasting presence of Roman history, ideas, leadership, and its interpretations physically and culturally?
Not so much ‘what did the Romans do for us’ and more ‘What do we really know about Roman Britain and the Romans?’
In our latest short course we will draw together some of the UK’s leading scholars on Roman and Classical history to address, challenge and inform us about Britain and the Romans.
Starting in February and running through until the end of April, the course will be live and also available on recording, with support materials supplied through the HA website.
