I Shall Never Fall in Love

Review by Tamsin, year 9, St Mary’s RC High School
This book was, in all honesty, a pleasant surprise. I’d never read any comic books or graphic novels before this one, and I didn’t anticipate the depth and nuance its medium would be able to capture. Set in two contrasting settings- London and a fictional rural town- this book told the story of three friends coming of age in Georgian England. I found the story relatively predictable but enjoyable nonetheless and its characters were a definite strong point. They were complex, likeable, diverse, funny, and prone to coming out with entertainingly ruthless quips. Without a doubt, though, my favourite part of I Shall Never Fall in Love was the art. It was so detailed and gorgeous; the author clearly put unimaginable time into its creation, which absolutely paid off! Additionally, I loved the ‘History Corner’ section. Having background information for scenes/characters/ideas in the book was amazing, and I investigated many of the sources cited, which were interesting. I’d recommend this book not only to those who enjoy graphic novels or history, but anyone who likes beautiful drawings, fun dialogue and compelling characters.

I shall never fall in love is a beautiful book. It encompasses the tales of Eleanor, Charlotte and ‘George’ Georgiana. George’s story was particularly interesting as they explored who they are as a person and their gender identity in a time that this is not spoken of. Charlotte explores the issues in society with POC, she herself is a person of colour. The time it is set in is particularly interesting as queer people and POC were not commonly regal and were often shunned. The plot was beautiful and made me cry. It shows the real-life stories of the people often forgotten or killed. I would recommend this story to a friend, especially a person of colour or transgender individual.
