Feather

Review by Elsie Age 13 Roundwood Park School
Feather is a book about how a young boy finds out about his uncle’s role in WW2. I found the boy’s uncle the most interesting character as he is not what you expect. I liked all of the characters. I learnt that a white feather was given to people who refused to fight in the war to embarrass them.  The plot was serious and mysterious, and it had an unexpected plot twist at the end. I would recommend this book to other people as it is a quick and fun read. I liked everything in the book! It was five stars!

Review by Angelica, Year 8, Outwood Academy Bishopsgarth
This book was set in the modern times. It is about a young boy named Hew, who visits his nan every day on the way home from school. One day, she forgets his name and thinks he is her never talked about brother. As the dementia starts to grip the nan, Hew and his friends start to investigate what happened to the brother for his nan. This book explores the theme of the history of conscientious objection in WW2 and family and friendship bonds. It also teaches about the historical facts about the WW2. I learned that in the WW2 that they used to give a feather as a symbol as shame or cowardness for not joining the Armed forces. I would recommend this book to young readers because it teaches some historical facts and is light-hearted as well.
