Witchspark

Review by Jamie, Year 8, Saint Ambrose College
I think Witchspark is a wonderful book where its timeline is the trump card, it takes place in the 1800s where people were accusing woman of being witches and burning them. In my book it is based around Witchcraft and how people shouldn’t use their powers even if they are superior to one another.

I found the most interesting character to me Huswyvern, a house with magical powers and it’s own consciousness, he was mane live during the isle spark with made a portion of humanity witches or wizards. Three houses were made magical of all.

I didn’t like Uncle Lichen as he was a useless character following around the main villain. He was also the uncle of the main protagonist (Eglantine). I'd like to think of him as a villain that does the trash talk but doesn’t back it up.

The bit that stands out for me in Witchspark was the Eglantines past, I thought though she had a duty to defeat the Wistlewitch to take back her house. Her mother was a powerful witch who had died to a disease. Her past was rather sad.

This book used simple language but included words such as melancholy every few chapters, I felt though the ending brought a smile to my face as she achieved her goal of bonding with Huswyvern, defeating the whistlewhich. Eglantine and her friend Victoria were brave and courageous during the story.

An interesting plot with one of the characters unable to find their Witchspark. I liked Victoria and I wanted to find out more about her, but I liked most of the characters. I enjoyed the fact that there were lessons to learn before you could unlock magic powers. I would describe the plot as: exciting, dangerous, and fun to read. I would recommend the book to those who love magic.
