The River Thief
By Hannah Peck
Review by Amelia, Year 8, Ashcroft Technology Academy
The story is set during a drought in England in the 1600s. Adderley, Lewes and Ef all set off on an adventure to restore the rain across the country by bringing a stone back to the sea. Throughout the novel, the characters develop friendships and bonds with each other. For example, Lewes and Adderley have always been friends until a sea-fey (Ef) comes in-between them. Ef creates different bonds between the two characters and along the journey they all grow closer together. The boundaries between Lewes and Adderley become more defined and they discover how different they are due to money and the way they grew up. The Speaking Stone brings memories from the past about the thieves and mystery of characters and plots. As the book progresses, the journey becomes more complicated, dangerous as well as more difficult to complete.
