Fia and the Last Snow Deer
By Eilish Fisher (illus. Dermot Flynn)
Review by Lynn, Year 6, William Tyndale Primary School
This jaw dropping book is fascinating and fabulous. It shows how worthy we are. This book also includes animals from the wild that lived a long time ago and gives you a feeling to feel brave in all conditions, even if you're reaching your limits. The book is set when people had to hunt food and people only wore animal skin and died a lot. The pictures are really beautiful and really clear what's happening in the story. My favourite character is Fia because despite being in danger she persevered to try to save her beloved person and that feeling came to my heart a lot.

Let me take you back to Ancient Ireland; the land of close-knit communities, Irish goddesses and classic tales, If you are intrigued by life back then, this is the book for you. Fia and the Last Snow Deer tells the tale of a thirteen-year-old girl, and a pearly white snow deer bonded together by a prophecy. Fia’s arduous journey will reel you in like the fish her father caught. This is amongst one of the best books I’ve ever read, and trust me, I’ve read many! The suspense builds up from the very beginning, seizes your interest and you can’t help but read on till you figure out what, when, where, why and how of everything. I knew close to nothing about Ancient Ireland before this, so when I realised what it all about, I had to learn as much as I could, for example, I never knew that the really believed a ‘Deer Mother’ controlled the sun. I loved all of the characters, but Mish really stood out to me. Whilst Fia was cold and bitter towards him for taking her spot, Mish understood, was calm and tried to make amends (to no avail). I believe that’s all you can really want of a person and his personality was so carefully created that he really stood out amongst everyone else. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend the book as Eilish Fisher has done a great job with the plot.
