Burn By Patrick Ness

Mahek's review
Burn is about 1957 America but with dragons. I found that very interesting and different to other books and I like how the author used dragons in a different way, this made it an interesting concept.

I loved that it was set in the past but also how would the world end and dragons. These concepts together were captivating and was overall very well done in terms of concepts.

The character I found the most interesting was Kazimir as in the beginning he was very mysterious.

I liked how the author also used a character that was biracial, another character was gay which I found interesting since this book was set in the 1950s. I did not expect that at all as it did exist but was not talked about, and in fact members of the LGBTQ+ community were persecuted. The book was also fast paced which intrigued me and made me want to read more.

I would recommend this to others because there are a lot of plot twists but there was to a point where there were a lot of them. So, if people do not like many plot twists, then I do not recommend them to read this, if they do then this is a great book for that.

Burn is a tremendously brilliant book, that kept me going for a while, whilst keeping my book craze down for a while. The characters were built well and gave me a real sense of anticipation many times.

Even though I have read the book, upon seeing one of my favourite authors, I haven't been disappointed at all and am glad I was able to be a part of the journey that Patrick has taken me through. There was a good use of background information, which I feel, really built up the book.

The book was a 9/10 only because it felt a little slow-paced for my liking.

Stella's review
I thought Burn was very good, if slightly strange. There were so many plot twists and interesting things that kept popping up with the characters. I though it highlighted many important issues about then and now, with racism and some queer characters. Another good thing was that the place when I thought the plot would end, was only half way through the book and it suddenly got a whole lot more exciting and dangerous. I loved the characters, and the dynamics between them however I feel like the historical element just wasn’t’ there much. Apart from the satellite and the racism it could have been set nowadays. I would have also preferred slightly less deaths as some parts were a bit too miserable but all in all a very good book.

4 out of 5 stars.

I very much enjoyed reading burn by Patrick Ness. I found it very intriguing and I was most intrigued in the character Kazimir and his secrets. I learnt about the financial problems of the time as well. The most interesting thing about the time it was set was the tension between the U.S.A and Russia. I didn’t know much about the beginning of the cold war but now know a lot more about the suspicions of normal people. I would heavily recommend this book to other readers.

Eva's review
I really like this book because it makes its own world and everything fits in while telling a story you just can’t put down. It’s very gripping and I love how the Mitera Thea turns out to be the goddess! It really draws you in and is very unpredictable. Love it!!

5 out of 5 stars.

Naomi's review
I really enjoyed the book. It is based in America during the 1950’s. One of the main characters is biracial and the other is a gay man. I think that that is really cool and interesting because of the time period that it’s based in. Overall the book was great, I was gripped when I started the book and the ending was satisfying. The only negative is that the chapters were in different perspectives and it could get confusing. I think I will definitely read other books from the author as well.
