Jasper: Viking Dog by Hilary Robinson

Eddie's review
My teacher asked me to read this because I enjoyed Jasper, Space Dog.

Like Space Dog, I learnt a lot of new things. I did not know about the computer link with Harald Bluetooth or how far the Vikings travelled.

I enjoyed reading the questions and answers in the funny letters. The fun facts, like the Viking poo, made me laugh so much.  The facts would help anyone who is learning about the Vikings at school.

I liked all the characters.  I hope they come back with more fun facts soon.

Paige's review
I enjoyed this book. I liked Jasper the most because he made loads of jokes. I liked all of the characters.

I have learnt about Vikings at school, but I did not know that they had dogs.

It did not really matter to me that it was set in Viking times – I think that the book would have been the same whatever time it was set.

It was a very funny book.

The thing that stood out to me was the idea of a dog being 1003 years old!!

I would recommend it to ages 9 - 12.

Liam's review
Jasper the Viking Dog is a book that is centred around an 8.5 year boy sending ideas to a Viking museum’s circulation.  It starts as a dog thinking he is a Viking and telling his owner (the 8.5 year old boy) that he is 1008 and suggests funny ideas to help the Viking museum.

The dog Jasper is my favourite character because he is a mixture of funny, stupid and confusing.

My least favourite character is the museum curator because he is not funny at all and is a kill-joy.

I learnt a lot of Viking facts.

The story is set in Bogna UK

I would recommend this book to 8 – 12 year olds.

Tabitha's review
In the book Viking Dogs, I found Jasper the main character interesting because he thinks he is descended from a long line of Viking dogs. I don’t dislike any of the characters, I like them all because each has different personality.

I learned a lot of new things about the Vikings for example they enjoyed skiing.

It was set in modern day but talks a lot about the Viking times.

The plot in the story is about a boy named Charlie, who is writing letters to a curator of The Viking Museum called Astrid. He asks if his dog Jasper would be allowed in to attract visitors to the museum.

The part in the story that stands out for me, is when Jasper changed his mind decided he wants to be descended from a long line of roman dogs instead of Viking.

I would recommend this book to the public because it’s a funny little story that children at any age can enjoy. It is also educational as you learn a lot about Vikings.

Ibrahim's review
Personally, I think Jasper the Viking Dog is a good book because it tells you a lot about history of Vikings.  The book is really funny because the main character Jasper thinks he is from a long species of Viking dogs and thinks he must be 1000 years old.  Charlie Tanner thinks Jasper is making up things and the pet parrot (whose name is Parrot) laughs on Jasper because he thinks Jasper is going nuts.  Overall I would recommend this for ages 5 – 12 because it is really funny and it makes me laugh.

Dexter's review
This book is full of adventures.

A dog would like to be a Viking. He somehow finds a viking and became him. Jasper asked the consel if he could be in the museum and consel said no you're just a dog!

I loved the book because it is very funny. My favourite part was when the consel declined his request.

Jasper is funny and he thinks he is 1,000 years old.

I recommend this to 6 + and my frend Henry.

Miriam's review
This was a fun book but not my favourite. In its favour, it is dyslexia friendly and has engaging chapter titles and the format is innovative. There is lots of humour, the whole concept is absurd which makes a refreshing change from the usual Historical Fiction style.

What I liked best was how it snuck in facts about daily life rather than just great battles. This is good if you like dogs but you don’t get so immersed in the world like you would an ordinary fiction novel. I wonder if the author or the dog got muddled with their maths, the dog says he is 1017 years old. He’s a Roman dog, but if you subtract that from 2021, the Romans weren’t around any more in 1004AD apart from the Byzantine Empire. But maybe it’s a good thing that it made me think about this and look it up. But I learnt lots of facts about the Vikings in a fun way.

Max's review
There was a dog that searched up viking poop! This book hooked me up from page 3. Charlie told the curator he wants to be in Viking museum. And the parrot said he is just a dog.

Characters: Charlie and Jasper. Charlie is age 8, he has got secrets and he likes to write letters. Jasper likes Vikings and found out a lot about them such as a coin, a Viking helmet and a cup.

I would recommend this book for children age 7 +

My favourite part was reading adout the largest poo ever found – it is in the Viking centre in York.

Olly's review

This book is very imaginative. This book is about a dog who imagines a lot - today he thinks he is a Viking dog from the olden days! Jasper tries to get in a museum to try and show the people who came to see him, and he shows the people what a Viking dog looks like.

My favourite bit was where Jasper wanted to show the people where he chased the bear to show what a viking dog looks like.

Characters: Jasper is alway’s imagining thing like being a space man or living under water and he is alway’s determined.

Recommend: I think to give this book to animal lovers and I will give it to my friend because he likes dogs.
