One Shot

Kayla's review
One Shot is a short novella about a girl named Margaret. She ventures out and sees how cruel the world is.

I enjoyed Margaret’s character. She’s serious for her age yet still holds a naivity. She doesn’t trust people completely but still has hope that she someone would love her. I dislike the character simply named ‘Husband and Wife’. They try to be manipulative but i could see they were trouble as soon as they were introduced. They seemed rushed, as most of the plot was. Everything happened to quickly. I didn’t have a chance to process everything that was happening. It felt like i was just being dragged along. I didn’t know much about this time period. It sounded quite historical and how people we’re quite horrible and treated everyone as such. Would I recommend this book to my peers? I would if they enjoyed quick-paced books. Although, I wouldn’t read it again.

Melvin's review
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was set in 19th century America and we learn from the novel that Maggie wants to take after her father. However, her mother considered this unladylike and so led Maggie to a life of hard labour and survival. Personally, I would say that 'Ma' was not an attractive character since no matter what Maggie did to apologise and repay her for what she did, the mother was still so cold and still disliked her throughout the novel. Without a doubt, I find Maggie the most interesting because she is unique compared to most and used the skills taught by her father to take her on an incredible journey. She was in the depths of hell but she persevered and never gave up. This makes her an admirable character. Through reading this spectacular novel, I find that in the 19th century, people in America were most likely to be struggling and I believe this could be due to the Great Depression. I knew quite a bit of information about this timeline beforehand so this made the book all the more intriguing to read. The plot was seriously interpreted, especially from the start however the plot got more interesting with the amount of action as it reached its finale. Finally, I would recommend it to other students as you feel as a reader sympathy for the characters, lots of facts and drama in few pages so this book in my opinion stands out from the rest.
