The Somerset Tsunami
By Emma Carroll
Emma's review:
The Somerset Tsunami was a bit slow at the start, but it built up the pace in the middle and during the end.I liked how it was based on a true event, and also it really showed how much research she put into the book. I thought that Fortune was a great character, she showed determination during the book.
The plot is very energetic and you really get pulled in when the action starts. I also found that Emma Caroll described the tsunami as a person, a big roaring mass of water. All in all, I found the book entertaining in most parts (apart from the start) and very enjoyable.
Rania's review:
“The Somerset Tsunami” is without a doubt on of the most entertaining books that I've read so far. The story of a young girl named Fortune that is sent away from her home to work for a suspicious man’s son while disguised as a boy. I especially love how each character is portrayed. The plot had so many ups and downs that it was hard to keep track and I loved that; I was gripped from the outset. The story is based in Somerset, England in 1616 where strong women were classified as witches. This wonder-fled book taught me (and has been described wonderfully so it’s like I was there) what It would have been like to live in a world where witchcraft was apparently a threat, witch hunters were cruel and unjust, witch trials were considered “justice” when they were they were full of lies and innocent women were judged for being clever The story is addictive and I couldn't put it down. I would most definitely recommend this to anyone that enjoys history or well-written books. Now I know why the Book Trust has that Emma Carroll is the “Queen of Historical Fiction".
