Slavery is a part of our history, and its impact can be seen in the statues of influential men, the buildings that were constructed as a result of the wealth that was accrued from the plantations, the street names and the surviving graves of some of the black men and women themselves. It was even evident in fashion, as it became a sign of high status to own a black boy who was often dressed in exotic clothing. Today we can see this in many of the images from the time.
However, in the eighteenth century you did not have to own slaves to benefit from the barbaric practice. The trade affected the prosperity of all aspects of business...
