Possible teaching objectives

Introduce three other ‘criminals':

1. Martha Davies, charged with infanticide but released by magistrates because the water was so contaminated that her new born baby died.

2. George Loveless, trades union leader who was sentenced to seven years transportation to Australia. He was brought back and his sentence commuted to imprisonment.

3. Margaret Kelly, sentenced to 14 days hard labour but her employer asked for her to be let off lightly.

• Ask the pupils what this tells us about Victorians and crime and punishments.
