Become a member of a standing committee

Published: 13th March 2026

If you want to get more involved with the work of the HA but aren't sure about the commitment of a trustee position, we are also looking for members who would like to join our standing committees.

  • What do HA committees do?

HA committees help to steer, advise and support different parts of the organisation’s work. They bring together historians, teachers, academics and volunteers to ensure the Association reflects and serves its diverse membership.

In simple terms, committees help the HA shape policy, develop activities, and represent specific communities or priorities.

Serving on a committee is a way for members to contribute their expertise, shape the future of the subject, and support the historical community.

  • What are the commitments?

Committees meet three times a year – traditionally in January, June and September. One meeting is in person the other two are normally virtual. As a committee member you are expected to attend all meetings, but must attend a minimum of one committee meeting per year. In person meetings are always on a Saturday at the HA’s office in Kennington, London which is on the Northern Line. We pay reasonable expenses.

All committee members are expected to:

    1. Make time to prepare for, attend and contribute to committee meetings

    2. Be ready to support the charity between meetings or with other activities; for example:
      • Helping develop the HA’s resources, events and publications
      • Serving as an enthusiastic advocate for the work of the HA externally
      • Representing the views and needs of particular groups
      • Contributing to the planning, execution and development of the committee’s activities

    3. Adhere to the HA’s code of conduct.

  • How long does the committee member role last?

Committee members hold their role for period of three years from October 2026. They may stand again after the initial three years and serve a total of six years before taking a compulsory break of one year, after which they will be eligible to put themselves forward once more.

  • What roles are currently available?
