What do broadcasting and the media reveal about the lived experience of the ‘swinging sixties’?
By Kathryn Elsdon
Target audience: Key Stage 3
This resource is a series of seven lessons focusing on the enquiry question: What do broadcasting and the media reveal about the lived experience of the ‘swinging sixties’? The aim is for students to study a different theme or social group within the sixties to map out what the 1960s was like at the time. The other focus of this enquiry is using audio-visual material as a piece of evidence to shape students’ ideas regarding the overall enquiry.
The resource is intended for use with Key Stage 3, particularly Years 8 and 9, due to the sensitive nature of some of the material within this and the important messages that it contains.
Content note: Please review the content of the audio-visual resources before watching with students, as some contain extreme views and language contemporary to the period.
This enquiry was written by Kathryn Elsdon, a teacher of history at Little Heath School, Reading.
