Gutenberg and the story of print

Event Type: Local / Community

Takes Place: 17th October 2025

Time: 7:00pm

Venue: The Tudor Room, Apsley Mill Cottage, Stationers Place, Hemel Hempstead, HP3 9RL

Description: A presentation by our expert printer and much-loved tour guide who knows printing inside out, from the history to working practice. Fish and chip supper included. Part of our 2025 programme of talks. We have invited a number of extremely knowledgeable historians to speak on their areas of expertise. Tonight's speaker is Peter Balding. Peter spent his career working in print, starting as a compositor and ending as a manager before retirement beckoned. He was one the first volunteers to join The Apsley Paper Trail 24 years ago. Peter delivers print workshops as well as being a popular tour guide. His delivery is superb. Your ticket will cover the talk, a fish and chip supper, tea and coffee. We do not have a drinks licence for this site, so no alcohol will be available. All talks take place in The Tudor Room at Apsley Mill Cottage. The Tudor Room is the preserved boardroom of the former John Dickinson and Company and there is one flight of stairs to get there. The Cottage is the white building with the Basildon Bond clock, opposite Apsley Station. There is plenty of available parking in the shared Apsley Paper Trail/Paper Mill Pub car park. Please register your car with us before the start of the talk.
