Excavations at St James’s Abbey, Northampton
Event Type: Branch
Takes Place: 9th September 2025
Time: 18:00
Venue: Online
Description: The Augustinian Abbey of St James, founded in 1104-05, was a significant part of Northampton's medieval history until its dissolution in 1538. Our speaker Andy Chapman, now Hon. Secretary of the Northamptonshire Archaeological Society, led the excavations of the site in 2000-01 prior to its redevelopment for housing following the demolition of the former Express Lifts Company premises in Weedon Road. Andy's talk will cover not only the challenges of excavating a post-industrial site but also what the examination of burial remains from the Abbey's cemetary can tell us of the health and demography of Northampton's late medieval population.
