Vehicles to Vaccines – what happened to British manufacturing since 1951
Event Type: Branch
Takes Place: 2nd December 2024
Time: 18:00
Venue: University of Lincoln
Description: At the time of the Festival of Britain, British manufacturers made and exported more vehicles than any other country, yet our pharmaceutical industry made little more than simple remedies. A lifetime later, the majority of vehicles made in Britain are for foreign companies, but our pharmaceutical companies vie with the best in the world. So it’s not as simple as moaning that ‘we don’t make anything anymore’. Phillip Hamlyn Williams will talk about what he thinks happened. Phil Hamlyn Williams is an historian whose books include How Britain Shaped the Manufacturing World looking at the story of British manufacturing up to the Festival of Britain of 1951. He had previously written on army supply in both world wars discovering the astonishing contribution made by British manufacturers. His father spearheaded the mechanisation of the army in WW2, his grandfather was the quintessential Victorian inventor and his great grandfather exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851.
