Description: John Wilkes (1725-1797) was ugly, crude, a social climber, married for money and eventually, in great debt, outlawed – a total reprobate. He was also politically principled, brave, hugely popular across most levels of society – the King and Prime Minister North weren’t so keen - and able to raise a mob at will. He stood for Middlesex in four elections between March and April 1769. He won each time, but was repeatedly vetoed from taking his seat. Finally, he was allowed in and nothing was heard from him again. What kind of man was this?
