This led to a situation where Germans were attacking Italians, Partisans were attacking Italians and Italians were attacking Italians. Francesco D’Ambra was a naval gunner based on the Albanian coast. Over the ensuing three years he was imprisoned, pressed into service, enslaved, starved, beaten and tortured by each of competing groups in turn. '
