Description: 'On 8th September 1943 Italy capitulated. It did not surrender. It simply stopped fighting. This led to a situation where Germans were attacking Italians, Partisans were attacking Italians and Italians were attacking Italians. Francesco D’Ambra was a naval gunner based on the Albanian coast. Over the ensuing three years he was imprisoned, pressed into service, enslaved, starved, beaten and tortured by each of competing groups in turn. '
