Cunning Plan 134: local history at KS3

Teaching History feature

By Dan Moorhouse, published 19th July 2009

Question: How can we plan to integrate local history into Key Stage 3 schemes of work so that pupils are engaged by the relevance of the subject across different periods of time?

Local history can come in all shapes and sizes, from a large-scale oral history project to the perusal of a local map. Cunning Plan normally maps out a specific scheme of work, but this one is different. Here, Dan Moorhouse explores a wide range of ideas for integrating local history into existing enquiries. He shares ideas that have worked successfully in different history departments. These include oral history projects, homework projects, campaigns for blue plaques and classroom use of local archives and museums.
