History in the Headlines!

Enter our Great Competition

The Historical Association in partnership with The Guardian are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for pupils aged 7-18. Our competition surrounds the release of the Guardian and Observer's digital archive, all the newspapers online back to 1791 - a fantastic resource for schools.

Pupils who enter the competition will be asked to produce a headline news story about an event from the period of the Archive (1791-2000), using the Guardian and Observer's digital archive for research. Finished articles can then be sent to us for judging.

The great thing about this competition is that it can be done as part of a cross-curricular project with English/Media departments, or as part of a scheme of work. It could be that a whole class submits entries or it may be that just one or two pupils enter with teacher guidance in their free time or as part of a club.

The Prize

There will be four age categories, 7-11, 11-14, 14-16 and 16-18 and the lucky winner in each category will get to see their news story properly printed as a newspaper front page and framed for them to keep. Not only that but they will also win other exciting goodies for their school, including free access to the Guardian & Observer Archive and Free Historical Association membership for one year. There will also be runner-up prizes in each category who will also receive goodies. There will be an overall winner chosen from the winners of each category, taking into account age, experience and creativity.

The lucky overall winner will receive an all expenses paid trip to the Guardian to immerse themselves in the world of journalism for the day.
