"A conflict education resource that provides an international outside perspective of ethnic, religious and cultural conflict to students, whilst teaching at the same time how to deal with conflict on a micro-local level."

Dear Members of the Historical Association,
We would like to ask you if you could list this event for us.
I examined your "submit an event page" but it appears one needs a password etc...  Can you help? Also will be possible for our event to get listed in your magazine?

Education Resource:
Our teaching resource Dealing with Conflict (DWC) is ideal to help students to think about conflict through the famous international example of Wahat al-Salam ~ Neve Shalom (see below for details), but then taking it back to whatever conflict students here in the UK may face.

The pack has  been designed for the use in history lessons, citizenship education, R.E., geography, English.   Dealing with Conflict is tied in with all learning outcome requirements of key stage 3-5.

DWC also suits well all areas of community cohesion, inter-faith, and inter-cultural, youth-work, as well as intra-religious, and intra-cultural  work in the class room  and school setting.

What is offered in the training on 3rd of February?
We are offering conflict, mediation and cohesion insights, that are modeled after this special village, but refer to the local needs of children in your own school. The pack has a plethora of topical activities, and games and an entire educational resource, which we will run through with you.

In our workshop on the 3rd of February,  you will be given creative examples of application, with a solid understanding of dialogue from one of the hardest testing grounds on earth (Palestine - Israel conflict)`.

The Workshop is led by Susan Denton Brown, a former Head of Religious Education, who is also a conflict facilitator for Neve Shalom ~ Wahat al-Salam, and nonviolence trainer for the Gandhi Foundation.

Our background?
The institution, School for Peace is based in the village of  Wahat Al-Salam ~ Neve Shalom(WAS-NS) Israel (*), one of the first pioneers in Arab / Jewish relations since the 1970s, and still the only successful community in Israel, and to probably globally,  where Arabs and Jews live together by choice. The village also houses the first successful mixed kindergarten and primary school in the Middle East teaching Arabs and Jews together (in two languages with the three religions).  This without any loosing any sense of their cultural identity, but gaining insights into the others.

The  School for Peace in WAS-NS is one of the most acknowledged centres of encounter in the region and internationally.  It compares to similar centres in Northern Ireland, South Africa, the FYR and so on.  Mostly young people, Jews and Palestinian Arabs (who are both Christian and Muslim), over 16 are brought together every year, for the the duration of four days.  They learn to encounter the other constructively in a method that considers all the imbalances and problems that divide the communities.  Very unique ways of working with people have evolved there (Detailed information on this can be read in Halabi: Israeli and Palestinian identities in Dialogue)

The British Friends of Wahat al Salam ~ Neve Shalom act as the UK representative of the village and fund all educational institution in the village. We also run a set of educational initiatives ourselves, of which Dealing with Conflict is a part.

Costs:
The Teaching pack on its own costs £19.50 plus postage.
The costs of attending our workshop on 3rd of February is £70  (£50 concessions).  This includes a copy of the pack.

There may also be a follow up course for all those who have attended this and earlier workshops.

When and Where?
The date for our next training workshop is 3rd  Feb. 2008 at St. Ethelburga's Centre for Peace and Reconciliation  (near Liverpool Street Station.).

We are also able to run bespoke training (in any area on the UK), given a minimum of bookings (depending on the region).  Just contact us to discuss!

For any other questions please get in contact.

With kind regards

Thank You
