Outdated Textbook Collection Archive Developments

The Collection of over 6,000 items of school history texts held in the School of Education of the University of Durham was endowed by Professor Gordon Batho on the occasion of his retirement in 1988 to ensure access for scholars. It originated at the Historical Association in London and has been enlarged by donations over the years. It is now recognised by the Historical Manuscripts Commission as a unique archive of history texts published between 1845 and modern times. The Collection is valuable in illustrating the changing attitudes in history writing and the changing methods of history teaching.
A catalogue of the Collection can be viewed on the internet by visiting the website of the History of Education Project.
Application to view the Collection (items cannot be borrowed) should be made to Emeritus Professor G R Batho, c/o The Miners' Hall, Red Hill, Durham, DH1 4BB (0191 370 9941). Email: gordon.batho@btopenworld.com
