The American Civil War (1861-1865) is widely known in Britain, particularly as it has been represented in popular novels and films (Gone With the Wind; Glory; Cold Mountain; etc.), but is largely seen as an exclusively American phenomenon. This day will situate it in British context, looking specifically at:
- British anti-slavery activism, especially among working people
- Free trade and the Union blockade
- British and Irish soldiers in the Confederate and Union forces
- British journalists' depiction of the conflict
- Written sources, images, music, novels, and film
Fee £45, Manchester University is offering a 10% discount to HA members.
