Can you help Cumbria HA with Ordnance Survey and 'Original Names' Books'

Adrian C. Grant has alerted us in Cumbria to the existence of the Ordnance Survey Original Names’ Books. Please see the ‘Branches – News’ section of the revised HA website for further information. Do any of you out there know of these sources, which happen to survive for Cumberland and Westmorland but not for many other English places? He has inspired us to think about fronting an application for funding to support the copying of these items for use in Cumbrian archives, libraries and schools. Are there other HA branches which have gone down such paths? Some of us up here are aware of the difficulties in winning lottery or other funding. It involves more than just having a bank account and keen individuals. Other bids for financial assistance have required advice at some cost from specialists and consultants in award winning. Perhaps you can help us? Ian C.Mason, FHA, Hon. Secretary of Cumbria Branch of the Historical Association.

Many thanks Dan for your prommpt response and please forgive this my slow reply. Yes our Branch would be interested in details of the succesful funding bid that you and your Secondary members were involved in. Please use my e-mail imason@talk21.com for this.
But is there anyone out there who knows anything of the contents of these O/S Original Names Books?

Several Secondary members are involved in projects that involve digitisation of archived materials. If its of any use, I can pass on details of the successful funding bid that was put together for that project and would be happy to outline ways that the archive could be used by educational institutions.
