We're currently planning a series of web debates to begin in September 2008. Are there any areas that members would find particularly useful?

I would find a debate about the way constructivist learning theory can be applied to the teaching of history useful. In many New Zealand secondary schools there is a shift towards constructivism and I am interested in what this looks like within the history classroom.

Sorry for taking 3 months to respond ... Louise Brown's ideas shown as part of our workshop at SHP in July would provide a good basis for debate: Did the Industrial Revolution improve people's lives? And the materials will be posted on the schoolshistory forum site very soon - honestly!

I would find debates about impact of events in the 20th century really useful, and anything medieval brilliant. Such a great idea, I'm really looking forward to it!

Kathryn - I'll get working on suitable people to lead one on the Industrial Revolution. Medieval Monarchs - now that the site is up and running I can start drumming up interest in that, so hopefully something can be arranged for this academic year (It may only be a few schools but I'm sure we can get something sorted out).

Barbara - sounds good. Exactly the sort of thing that should work well.

Would something for the end of Key Stage 3 about how the twentieth century should be remembered be useful? Could help reinforce signficance. I think there were some suggestions in a past Teaching History which looked at Age of Warfare, Age of Technology, Age of Rights etc.

We would certainly be interested in the greatest medieval monarch debate - it generated a lot of interest last year. As for the Industrial revolution - I had in mind year 9 as we teach this topic at the start of year 9 and a debate could be the ideal culmination of our study and help develop their historical debating skills which I would hope would help their essay writing skills as well.

Thanks for these suggestions Kathryn. We've got a debate on the Middle Ages planned, which is possibly ging to be a repeat of the discussion about which monarch was the greatest in the medieval period. Industrial Revolution - should make for a good debate, certainly lots of good questions that can be asked. Which year group did you have in mind for that?

We would be very interested in the webdebates and especially any topics focused on the 19th century, e.g. how much progress was there, or issues to do with the Industrial revolution. Also the Middle Ages and 1066.
